Social Justice

How we, as adults/parents, spend our time demonstrates to our children what is important in life. Whether it is work or play, watching television, shopping, playing sports or helping others. What have you shown your kids to be important lately?

Social Action
UUCM has actively participated in opposing several local and statewide initiatives that would negatively impact our community. In 1994 we held a rally in protest of Cobb Counties Anti-Gay Referendum. In 2002 UUCM protested outside the Cobb County School Board meeting where discussions were underway to give Creation beliefs equal footing with Evolutionary science in the science cirriculum. In 2003/2004 UUCM protested the posting of the Ten Commandments in government buildings as yet another violation of seperation of church and state. 2004 has seen us once again hosting a Rally against discrimination on Marietta Square in protest over the proposed Anti-Gay Marriage Amendment. We encourage active participation in the Democratice process by providing voter registration cards and information on how to contact your local, state and federal representatives regarding various issues. Our activies are non-partisan and strictly issue oriented. For more information on national social justice initiates visit www.UUA.org.

Our Partnership with M.U.S.T.!
UUCM works closely with the Ministries United in Service & Training – M.U.S.T. This is a local inter-faith agency providing non-redundant assistance to at- risk individuals /families in our community. Please join our on-going efforts with your participation in:

Sunday Food Offering
We ask each family to bring a non-perishable food item to donate to the M.U.S.T. pantry. This helps feed hungry families & seniors in our area. We also collect toiletries for donation. Hotel travel-sized soaps/shampoos are ideal for distribution to homeless men, women or children who visit the local M.U.S.T. shelters. M.U.S.T. BREAKFAST At 5:30 a.m. on a Saturday or Sunday join other trained UUCM volunteers to prepare breakfast for 60+ men, women & children. It’s a hearty southern meal of grits, eggs, biscuits, sausage gravy & fruit. Once you’ve done it, you’ll never forget the gratitude on the faces you see. It is a fun, rewarding way to reach out to others in a different place in their life. Children really benefit from participating and are a big help.

Annual Donations
Throughout the year we collect different items at different critical periods. July – School Supplies: The first pick-up and last drop-off on the school bus is the children of the M.U.S.T. shelter. This is so the other kids won’t know they live in a homeless shelter. Children who stay at the shelter during the school year are required to attend classes, but usually have no supplies.

  • July - We collect school supplies to distribute to these kids of all ages.
October – Blankets: Many homeless and homebound persons die of exposure during the cold winter periods. M.U.S.T. distributes blankets/sleeping bags to these at-risk persons, whether outdoors in the elements or indoors with no heat.
  • November – Holiday Baskets: Turkey’s, Hams and all the fixin’s are collected and distributed to at-risk families through M.U.S.T.. UUCM welcomes your donation of food items or grocery gift certificates to this holiday effort.
  • December – Presents for All Ages: M.U.S.T. has a holiday gift closet where parents and kids alike can pick out an item to exchange during the holidays. It is meaningful gesture to be part of the season of giving.

We've Adopted!
UUCM also is active in beautifying our community by participating in the Adopt-A-Highway program. We are the happy highway parents of a mile on Villa Rica Road, Marietta. Clean-ups occur quarterly so come out and join the fun!

UUCM Recycles!

Join us in the environmentally friendly fund-raising efforts as we recycle:

Newspapers
In the far end of the parking lot is a recycling bin devoted to newspaper only (no magazines or non-newsprint items). At the end of each year we receive $$$ for the amount of papers recycled at our location during the year. So, your friend and neighbors papers are welcome.

Magazines
Near the newspaper bin is a magazine recycling bin. It only takes magazines and similar print media (no newspapers or garbage, etc). Once again, we receive $$$ for the amount of magazines we have collected throughout the year.

Cell Phones
In a box in the foyer under the M.U.S.T. table we collect old, used cell phones. These are recycled for $$$ for our building fund and programs.

Printer Cartridges
In the same box with the cell phones we are collecting used printer cartridges which we recycle for $$$ for our building fund and programs.
