UUCM History – A Brief History
In early 1993 Rev. Joan Armstrong was appointed by the Unitarian Universalist Association (UUA) as an extension minister to what was to become the Unitarian Universalist Congregation of Marietta (UUCM). We found rental space in what had previously been a liquor store across from the Civic Center on Fairground Street in Marietta. UUCM held the first worship service there on Sept. 12, 1993. The congregation was chartered as a member congregation with the UUA on November 6, 1994.
In 1996 we moved from the Fairground Street location to holding Sunday morning services at the Cobb Family Resources facilities with Rev. Frances West as our new minister. We quickly outgrew this space and in 1997 we relocated to new rental space on Mountain View Road, the previous site of a small Lutheran church.
After two years in the Mountain View location, we again outgrew our space for religious education. An 8 acre lot with a 4-bedroom home on Villa Rica Road was for sale, and with a down payment raised from the congregation, the property was bought in 1999.
In August of 2003 Rev. Frances West retired and Rev. Victoria Claire was hired as our half-time minister.
In October of 2004 the Board of Trustees hired Rev. Roy Reynolds as our new half-time minister.
Services were held in the house at the Villa Rica Road property until a new sanctuary building was constructed. Our first service was held there December 5th, 2004.
